Family owned Bittersweet Bakery is located in the beautifully
renovated 1911 era State Bank building across from the Village
Hardware Store in downtown Plum City.
A family affair, owner and lifelong Plum City resident Gwen Glaus
operates the bakery with the help of her husband Todd. Parents
Vaughn and Janice Girard also help, as do children Andrew, Brenton and Laura
when they're home from school.
Gwen's previous skills as a florist are evident in the striking
artisan goods she creates, and many of her talents and recipes come
from her own family and experiences.
A few years ago she traded flowers for
flour, and now fulfills a dream every day by serving hot coffee,
delicious home made sweets and baked goods to her loyal clientele.
Though the bakery's kitchen has modern equipment like convection
ovens and coolers, an antique dining table and cupboard from St.
John's Catholic Church in Plum City highlight the customer area.
Vintage photos of Plum City also line
the hallway, and walls are filled with antique bakery tools and
supplies adding to the charm and warmth of her shop.
"It's exciting when so many new
people, along with locals come in and take the time to enjoy their
baked goods in the bakery," Gwen says. "And when they leave, they
tell me what a great place this is!" |
